Cursory: JAMB registrar Prof. Ishaq Oloyede announced a new policy holding UTME candidates responsible for their parents’ disruptive behavior during exams. This decision comes after parents caused delays and cancellations during an exam session. Centers allowing parental interference risk delisting, and candidates may face penalties for their parents’ misconduct. The policy aims to maintain exam integrity and prevent disruptions for all candidates.
The registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has announced a new policy regarding the conduct of Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates and their parents. According to Prof. Oloyede, candidates will now bear the consequences if their parents disrupt the examination process.
In an interview with The Punch, Prof. Oloyede explained that JAMB is taking a firm stance against any disruptions caused by parents during the examination.

“We are taking a decision now that we will make a candidate culpable once the mother or father or the parent of that person is found to have disrupted our examination.” he said
He recounted an incident where parents attempted to halt the examination due to a 30-minute cable issue, leading to delays and the cancellation of sessions.
Expressing dismay at the behavior of these parents, Prof. Oloyede emphasized that any center allowing parents to interfere with the examination process would face delisting. Furthermore, JAMB has instructed centers to identify the parents involved, and appropriate sanctions will be imposed, including penalizing the candidate.

“That was how parents insisted that the second and third sessions would not commence because their children couldn’t sit the first session. The centre had to bring in security agents to arrest the situation. “What type of parents are these? We are now saying that any centre that allows a parent to get near where the candidates are being screened or being treated, that centre will be delisted. Secondly, we have instructed the centres to just identify the parent and the candidate, we would take a proper sanction, against the candidate.”
Prof. Oloyede stressed that candidates should not suffer due to the misconduct of their parents. He stated, “Whoever has a bad parent deserves to suffer the consequences of the bad behaviour of the parent. They cannot be destroying the careers of other students because of their own emotions and indiscipline.”
This new policy aims to ensure the smooth conduct of UTME examinations and uphold the integrity of the process for all candidates.
